Access/Enterprise Manager Diagrams Incompatible?

I asked this one a while back but I still haven't got it figured out yet.
What my problem boils down to is that SQL server diagrams created with
Access XP (latest version with patches) created through an ADP and diagrams
created with enterprise manager (latest version + patches) seem to be
completely incompatible. Whenever I open a diagram created with one tool in
the other tool, the tool doing the opening crashes, completely crashes at
that. I'm working on a project and the DB is growing to a complexity where I
really need a reliable way to share the diagrams with my team members. I
don't want to put too much work into good diagrams with one tool if they're
going to be useless in the other. Other developers I have spoken with don't
seem to have this problem. Have I missed a patch? Is this a known
incompatibility? Is something configured wrong? I'm at wits end.
Sorry for the cross posting but this anomaly is really annoying me and we
need to use both Enterprise Manager and Access and this is holding us up
somewhat. So I'm hoping to fish for answers in the largest pool. Thanks in
advance to anyone who can give me a clue on this one!
Jon
I have used both interchangeably without a problem. It would seem a drastic
step to start uninstalling/reinstalling without knowing exactly what the
problem may be or if it will be cured. I suggest just creating and viewing
all the diagrams in Access because everyone should have that installed.

|||Which version of Access do you use? Access2002(XP) or Access2003? Since I
have the same problem with SQL Server2000(Developer edition) and AccessXP,
i.e. Diagram created in one program crashes othe other program when opening.
I just wonder whether Access 2003 has the same problem or not. At least,
with AccessXP, it is not "Just me" thing.

Access Vs SQL Server

Hello!

I am trying to gather information on why MS SQL Server 2000 is a better enterprise level database management system MS Access 2002. There is an article on the Microsoft Technet, but when I try and access the article I get a 404 error. Link is there, but page behind is missing.

http://www.micrsoft.com/sql/techinfo/planning/SQLAccess.asp

I know the basics, just want stats and facts to back them up.

There are lots of reasons like this. Access is good if your data is less than 2GB and depends what you are looking from a database.|||Access is not a database "Server". Thus, if you have a query in Access that joins a parent table with 10,000 rows to a child table with 100,000 to return a filtered set of records consisting of, say 200 rows, Access will transfer all 110,000 records from both tables over your network and then perform the SQL statement on whatever (slow) desktop the user happens to be at.

Under SQL Server, all the calculation is done on the (powerfull quad-processor, RAM out the wazzoo) server, and only the final 200 rows are returned over your network.

Hey...no one told him about the cost...

What's the differences between a kia and a bentley?

I know the cost differences involved, and the client is aware as well, and in the long run, user connection timeouts and database size limitations may outway the costs based on recovery and migration...

Thanks again!

Access through MS Access ADP for everyone?

Hello,
We have recently installed SQL enterprise manager. I was testing the securi
ty to the databases when I realized that if I login to XP under a standard d
omain user account, open MS Access, create an ADP project, then under connec
tions, pick the sql server, I can see and pick any of the databases and then
I can open and view any of the tables in any of the databases. How can thi
s be possible? We are using NT authentication. This user has no account in
SQL and is just a domain user. It's allowed somehow with the security you have implemented
on the server, in the databases. It's not clear what version
or edition of SQL you are running, where the SQL Server
instance is installed - on the network and you are accessing
this over a network? It's not clear what operating system
the SQL Server is running on, is the SQL Server in a domain
or is this actually a workgroup? Did you change any of the
default security settings? Who are members of Local Admins
where SQL Server is installed? What is the status of the
guest account in Windows where SQL is installed?
What databases are you actually accessing and opening
tables? Are these system databases?

Access Sql 2005 from sql 2000

Hi,

I access the sql 2000 db's . Now, the dbs have been moved to 2005. Is it possible to connect to sql 2005 db from sql enterprise manager 2000. Or let me know if I have to upgrade to 2005 to access the same.

I get the error message To connect to the server you must use sql server management studio or sql server management objects(SMO) when trying to access the server from sql enterprise manager 2000.

Usually it is not possible to access higher version dbs from a lower version.

Please help me out as soon as possible as this is very urgent.

Thanks & Regards,

K. Sripriya

Hi Sripriya K,

You will have to upgrade to sql 2005 management studio to manage sql 2005 database's
|||Priya you cannot access your SQL 2005 databases from SQL 2000 enterprise manager but vice-versa is possible......Yes you need to have SQL 2005 to access the same.......also you cannot restore sql 2005 dbs backup file in sql 2000.....and you also cannot perform detach and attach sql 2005 dbs in sql 2000|||If you are using SQL Express then you need the install SQL Management Express seperately, from there you can access your sql.
Download SQL Mangament Express

If you have other edition then you will have management studio installed already.
Goto run, type sqlwb, press enter.. You will get management studio to connect to sql 2005 server.

You cant use EM to connect to a Sql 2005 machine, but you can use query analyser to connect to sql 2005 server.

access permissions

hi all,
i have created a new login say "me" with the same userid and the password to access my database "test".I created this using the Enterprise Manager so i am not well aware of the securities and permissions in the sql server 2000.
The problem is that with this login "me" i can access the master and pubs database which i dont want as i have set the permissions to access only the "test" database.
I have checked this in the securties-->Logins-->Database Access tab.
Any help on this pls.
I could be wrong but I think you may have set the permissions in the Master database for the database permissions instead of the test database. Hope this helps.|||i am not sure abt this. But i have checked on the some sites..when you are creating the new login you have to specify the default database. So for my login "me" i specified the defaultdatabase as "test".Now the user "me" should only have the access to the test database.
But with the user "me" i can connect to the pubs and master database. Also when i am registerry the database i can access the pubs and master in the Enterprise Manager.
I m sure i m missing something..could anyone help me on this??
thanks
|||If you are using Enterprise manager SQL Server permissions are very simple, you have the database permissions you create in the database under User and the server permissions you create in the Security section of Enterprise manager. If your user can access Pubs and Master, then Master may have been your default database. Fixing such permissions problems may have you editing the Master database which I will not recommend in a production server. Hope this helps.|||

Thanks for your reply.I also thought that doing it with the Enterprise Manager would be a easy task and infact it is.But i am not sure for the reason of my problem.
I tried to do this also but my user "me" is not even shown in the pubs or the master databases users.
I searched this forum on this issue i found this post but without any solutions

access one remote SQL server using 2 different users accounts via Enterprise Manager

Hello,
I ran into a strange situation. I need to access the same remote SQL
server using 2 different user accounts at the same time. I can't seem
to do it using Enterprise Manager.
This is the first time I ran into this type of problem. I signed up for
web hosting service with a company called Netnation. They have a
strange policy- everytime, I create a database on their MS SQL server,
they give me a new user account to access the new database. so if i own
2 databases, then i will have to use 2 user names for the databases.
each user name can only access one database.
I am have problem configuring my Enterprise Manager to allow me to see
more than one database at a time because of the "one -user-one
-database" problem.
Does anyone know if there is anyway i can set up Enterprise Manager to
get round this problem?
Thank you in advance!
Eddy
One option is to register the server twice - create an alias
for the server and then register the second one with that
alias. You can use the second set of credentials to register
the second instance of the server with the alias.
So you'd end up with two server nodes pointing to the same
server but it would still be in one Enterprise Manager
console.

Thanks for the reply. I already tried registering the server twice but
it didn't let me. I can't remember the specifics of the error message.
Did it ever work for you?

|||Hi Eddy,
Yes...worked fine. You need to have it registered under a
different name than the current registration. That's why I
said to create an alias first. Then register the alias. You
probably tried to register it twice with the same name.
