Accessing April CTP OLAP cube from Excel 2003

I installed Office 2003 first on a Windows XP machine.

I then installed SQL 2005 April CTP.

When I try accessing cubes from Excel, I get the error
"An error was encountered in the transport layer"

This error occurs when I try to setup the connection to my OLAP cube.

Thanks for any help you can offer

TaylorDo you have msolap80.dll on your machine? Somehow the 80 dll may have made itself the default for olap access. Try to re-register the olap 9.0 dll at command prompt

regsvr32 "%program files%\common files\system\ole db\msolap90.dll"|||

Hi
I have the same problem and i did the solotion to registe the olap 9.0.dll and it don't resolve my problems. Do you know why.

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

I've the same problem and this solution has changed anything.

Please help me!!!!!!!!

|||Having the same issue here. No idea how to fix it at this point. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I am trying to access a cube in AS2005 from EXCEL 2003. Access through excel to the cube works fine from the server hosting the AS 2005 cube. It does not work when connecting to the cube from a remote machine.|||Error was fixed by adding the domain name to the username when logging into the Analysis Services server. <domain name>\<username>|||

In SQL2000 you could extract ptsfull.exe or ptslite.exe from the distribution disks and run these on the client to install OLAP 8.0 without installing the whole SQL Client tools suite. Pivot table services would then work in Excel against a SQL2000 Analysis Services database.

Try as I might I can't find these files on the SQL2005 distribution disks. Have they been renamed or is this approach no longer supported? Being able to install OLAP 9.0 on clients would be very useful.

Has anyone discovered the secret to this yet?

Nick

You can install OLE DB 9.0 via a download from MS. I think this is what you are asking.... I found it at the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=d09c1d60-a13c-4479-9b91-9e8b9d835cdc&displaylang=en

I downloaded the file called "SQLServer2005_ASOLEDB9.msi".

You can also get to the same page by googling Analysis Services OLE DB 9.0 if the link fails. In addtion to installing this, I also had to install XML6.0 first. The installer for OLE DB 9.0 will let you know if this is needed. The XML 6.0 upgrade is also available on MS site though I was only able to locate through a Google search looking for "XML 6.0 download". I then pulled down the install called "msxml6.msi".

Hope this helps!

I have XML6.0 installed, OLE DB 9.0 installed but I still get the error when trying to connect to the OLAP server. Anymore ideas?

Accessing Analysis Services 2005 from MS Excel using HTTP from Windows 2000 Server

Hye Friends,
I have installed and configured SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services and MS Office 2000 with the latest Service Packs on Windows 2000 Server. I am able to connect to my Analysis Services from MS Excel using the following URl in Excel ...
http://<ip address>/olap/msmdpump.dll ("olap" being my Virtual Directory)
I was wondering whether I would be able to connect to the same service without using the fully qualified path with only IP-Address... i.e... using only
http://<ip address>
I have been able to implement the above in Windows 2003 Server, but having problems doing the same in Windows 2000 Server. Can anyone help?
Thanks in Advance

How were you able to do so in Windows 2003? I've tried using IIS 6.0 to redirect, but without success.

accessing a remote Windows database

I'm trying to figure out how to access a Windows database (SQL server) from a Linux server. I'm trying to use Win32::ODBC and I've got a lot of information on how to make a connection, running queries, extracting the data, but the piece that I'm missing is what do you do if your database in NOT local ?? I'm assuming accessing remote databases is something developers do, so I'm a little confused on why I can't find any data about this. Can you provide any information ?In the strictly ADO microsoft world, you can supply a Data Source parameter on your connection string. The data source would be the name or IP (hopeflully name) of the server the database lives on.

Also, you may have better luck in trying to get the DBI's/DBM's for perl and SQL Server.|||I'm not very familar with the windows world (I'm in the Linux/Unix) ... can you possibly give some examples/references of what you mean ? Basically, someplace where I can see some sample code

Thanks !!|||If you have a connection string that you are passing to the connection object, it would look like this in Windows:

"DSN=SomeDSNName;UID=UserName;Password=Something"

The ODBC DSN (Data Source Name) will direct the request to the correct driver, server, and in some cases the database as well. If you do not have a DSN available, you have to supply these yourself:

"Provider=SQLOLEDB;UID=UserName;Password=something; Data Source=ServerName;Database=DatabaseName"

As for examples from a UNIX/Linux world, I am at a total loss. I was not even sure that ODBC existed on Linux. Hope this helps.|||I think I need to use the DBI::Proxy, I just have to make sure the correct modules are loaded on the windows machine

How do I access a MS Windows based database from UNIX/Linux using DBI::Proxy?
On the UNIX/Linux machine install DBI and all the modules to support DBD::Proxy.
On the Windows system install DBI, all the modules for DBD::Proxy, and DBD::ODBC.
Define a system DSN (using ODBC connection manager) to the Windows database.
Using the ODBC Test connection, test the ODBC connection.

I just know much about loading modules on Windows. Any thoughts on that ??

Thanks for your help so far.

Access to sql on windows for mysql application

Hi
I hope someone here can advise or at least point me to a good site to
pursue this.
Have installed a password protection system (freeware) successfully on
a unix/php/mysql server and looking forward to developing it into a
full blown database application. I is written in php and use a mysql
database to hold user id's and passwords. There is a small amount of
code on each protected page on the site that checks the session.
I now need to set it up on a windows server system which uses IIS and
sql, mysql is not an option. It appears that ODBC could be the answer
but I don't want to fight my way through the mire of finding and fixes
issues one by one only to get trapped near the end and find it was not
possible all along.
Does anyone have any experience of the and am I on the right track.
Ideally the code will work with minimal change once set up. Would that
be possible and what would I have to set up on the server?
Thanks JohnYou'll need to look at the code and see if the SQL is really
portable. If it's a system written for a mysql backend then
it may not work. The SQL languages have different
implementations on the different database platforms. Without
knowing the app or the code, I don't know that anyone up
here could give you a definitive answer.

access to data in the cube

Hi,

i'm currently building a cube which data has a level of access depending who the logged in user is in the windows authentication. My cube's fact table is actually a VIEW with this line of code:

SELECT a.serviceid AS [service code], a.agentid AS [agent code], a.timeid AS date, a.talktime AS [talk time], a.wraptime AS [wrap time]
FROM dbo.factAgentActivity AS a INNER JOIN
dbo.factaccess AS b ON a.agentid = b.agent AND b.username = SUSER_NAME()

I used SUSER_NAME to get the name of the user currently logged in and compared it against the username table. If i open this VIEW in the SQL SERVER database, i can retrieve the right data that user will see. But when I used this in the Analysis Services and Browse the cube, the metrics and cubes have blank values. The same thing if i link my cube to excel.

Is my setup correct or im missing something here?

thanks in advance!

regards,

cherriesh

I'm not sure to understand but:

"SUSER_NAME()" return the current user logged in.

It means that when you process the cube "SUSER_NAME()" is replaced with the AS account.

If it is correct, how can AS dynamically change the user on browser time?

Maybe I'm missing something.

Francesco

|||if you already know what access they should have, why wouldn't you just create a role(s) within your SSAS database project and assign the NT Users (or NT Groups) accordingly. Depending on your storage mode for your cube once you process the cube the view wouldn't work anyway, that would just be used to perform the initial load of the cube.

Access SQL Server from Stand-Alone PC with Windows Authentication

I have a PC that is not joined to the domain. I want to be able to access
our SQL Server from it, but it is my active directory domain account that ha
s
access. How can I gain access to the SQL Server via Enterprise Manager or
Query Analyzer?Hello,
If the machine is in a workgroup, SQL server machine is in the domain, make
sure you can ping the SQL server machine from the machine you log on
successfully via IP address or machine name.
Create a same Local user account both on the machine and the SQL server
machine. The Local user account and password on both machines need to be
same . On the SQL server machine, add the Local user account as the SQL
server logins and grant the user right to access the database. By doing so,
you can access the SQL server via Query Analyzer with Windows
authentication.
Or you can access the SQL server using a SQL logins via Query Analyzer with
SQL authentication.
I hope the information is helpful.

access sql server across domain thru windows authentication

Hi,
I have a sql server in a domain which is different than the one I log into,
and thats server has Windows authenticatrion, I have a domain account in the domain where sql is running, now how do I provide that domain acc info en EM to connect to that sql server. If I just select windows authenication while registering that server it gives me Cannot generate SSPI context error.

Any help will be appricaited.

Tia,
ParthYou can not do this from EM, as far as I know!
Or if you can, I would like to know that, too.

Best regards!

Access restriction

I want to access mssql2000 server only by 'sa' & database login ids. I want to restrict windows administrator account to access the database. Please help !!!
Our enviorment :- SQL2000 with SP3 on Windows2000 advanced server with latest service pack..Create new login under the Logins node in EM and add "domain Admins" group. Select "Deny Access" under the Authentication option.
You can also restrict the group to individual databases by adding it in a particular database and assinging it specific roles(deny datareader, deny datawriter) etc.|||What's the SQL Server Agent running under?

Builtin\Admin?

In that case it will have sa rights..

You need to create a new account, give it sa, change the sql server agent to run with that

And remove auth to builtin...builtin still needs to be around to start up the box...

Oh and buy the book SQL Server 2000 ADMIN 911

Talks all about it...

when i am connecting the sql server in windows 2003 using the sql analyser t
he following error occurs
Server: Msg 17, Level 16, State 1
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SQL Server do
es not exist or access denied.
the authentication mode is mixed.
ICF is enabled.
aliasing used is TCP/ip
NetBios is also enabled
Message posted via http://www.droptable.comHi
Is port 1433 opened? You need a minimum of this when using SQL
authentication.
If you use Integrated, you need the 135, 136 and 139 open too.
