Accessing domain user name as a report parameter

In our legacy reports (ASP.NET/Crystal Reports) we use the logged in user account to filter the report.
Basically you are restricted to seeing your 'own' data when running the report based upon your user ID.
I am looking for suggestions as how to restrict report results based on something like domain user ID in Reporting Services.
There are many cases (like in the sales profession) where users of the same report do not want other users to access their information.
Thanks for any suggestions.use the global variable User!UserID
be aware that you may not create subscriptions for a report that contains user-defined parameter values.

Accessing Cube from Excel 2003

Analysis services Cube is created using SQL Server 2005 (CTP June). Server is in Prod domain.
There is no problems accessing and playing with Cube in the same box or within PROD domain.

While trying to access Cube from excel 2003 from a computer in other domain QUAL gives the following error

"an error was encountered in the transportation layer"

Any suggestions ?

I'm not exactly sure how IE Security settings interact with PTS, but your problem is making me think of the 'Access Data Sources across Domains' option in IE / Tools / Options / Security / Custom Level / Misc.

Is that option enabled?

Access using odbc to connect with SQL server

My workstation is XP prof sp2 w/ office XP under a domain policy.
i act as "administrator" using Access XP to connect with SQL server.
i can view and add records to the SQL server.
at the same workstation, i act as "normal user with normal rights" using
Access XP to connect with SQL server.
i can view BUT cannot add records.
The odbc is the same one. i also use the same login account with SQL
server.
How come i cannot add records? Thanks a lot.
Tony
The issue is not with the client but with the SQL Server whereby your
user-mode connection doesn't have permission to update the server.
You'll need to update the SQL Server to add these permissions to the
databases you want to use. Do a query under 'GRANT' privileges topics on
Books On Line for more details for the queries you want.

Access to SQL Server via WCF works only part time

We have 2 databases ( Guider and Talker ) and we have a WCF service that is logged in with a domain identity.

In our SQL Server we have the service ID added to the Data Server Logins and both Guider and Talker are given access to the user.

When we access Guider we have no problems getting data.

When we access Talker we have a login failure:

Cannot open database 'Talker' requested by the login. The login failed.

Login failed for user 'Acorn\CommunicationServices'.

The thing that gets me is that the user is created at the Server level, in both Databases, and at the server level both databases are checked for the user. master has been set as the default database for the user.

Basically, as far as I can see Talker and Guider are configured identically! So I cannot figure out why I cannot login to the second database!

Is there a specific setting I'm missing somewhere to grant login access to the user? I'm using

Management Studio Express to manage the database.

My guess here is that the default database defined for the login that fails (Acorn\CommunicationServices) is not configured properly. Another possibility may be a typo when specifying the DB name in the client.

One test you can try to verify if the principal can really access the DB is:

*Connect as a sysadmin

* run “EXECUTE AS LOGIN = ‘login_name’ “ to impersonate the principal

* USE [Talker]

I hope this helps,

access SQL Server on a different domain

Is there a way to access a SQL Server running on a different domain? I can access the same SQL Server from my machine, which is on a different domain using the ODBC connection, but when I try to access it using an application written in VB6.0 then I get the SQL Server does not exist error. I'm using the SQL Authentication method. If you have MDAC 2.6 or above, then TCP/IP is selected by default. Also check your Client Network Configuration.|||My MDAC is 2.7 and I'm using the TCP/IP connection. Also there is no Trusted connection between the two Domains.|||Trust does not matter for SQL, unless there is some kind of TCP filtering configured. It seems like in your case there is something else happening with your VB app. What are you using in it to connect? DAO, RDO, ADO, or direct ODBC API's?

access sql server in different domain

I just started as a consultant with a company who won't allow my notebook to
join the domain. No biggee - I can understand the security concerns. I am
able to get on the network and can Remote Desktop to the SQL Servers I need
to get to. However, life would be a heck of a lot better if I could map the
servers in EM. The problem is that the only user id I have in SQL is my
Windows id, not a local SQL Server id. And since I'm logged into my
notebook using cached credentials from a different domain, I can't register
the server in EM. I've read an article about using "net use \\<server>\ipc$
/user:<serverdomain>\<userid> <password>" and I was able to successfully run
this in a command window. I just don't really understand what it did for
me - because I still can't connect to the server in EM.
Is it possible to do what I want to do? If a solution is available in
Yukon, that would be acceptable too.
Thanks, Andre
Andre,
you might try to start EM with the "run as" option, but I doubt it will
work. As an alternative you could try using the WebAdmin utility. It's
more limited than EM, but for most tasks it would be sufficient.
You can download it at

\ASP.NETClientFiles into {SQL Web Administrator

otherwise the programm hangs when you click the 'login' button.
Hope this helps

Access SQL Server from Stand-Alone PC with Windows Authentication

I have a PC that is not joined to the domain. I want to be able to access
our SQL Server from it, but it is my active directory domain account that ha
s
access. How can I gain access to the SQL Server via Enterprise Manager or
Query Analyzer?Hello,
If the machine is in a workgroup, SQL server machine is in the domain, make
sure you can ping the SQL server machine from the machine you log on
successfully via IP address or machine name.
Create a same Local user account both on the machine and the SQL server
machine. The Local user account and password on both machines need to be
same . On the SQL server machine, add the Local user account as the SQL
server logins and grant the user right to access the database. By doing so,
you can access the SQL server via Query Analyzer with Windows
authentication.
Or you can access the SQL server using a SQL logins via Query Analyzer with
SQL authentication.
I hope the information is helpful.

access sql server across domain thru windows authentication

Hi,
I have a sql server in a domain which is different than the one I log into,

Access otehr sql server ina domain w/ Query Analyzer

Hi everybody,

I do not know if this is the correct area to post this topic? So, How to access
different sql server with query analyzer? Usually, when to install sql server, it
access the database server locally installed, now I like to access other sql server
within a domain using query analyzer. How to configure this in order I could use
query analyzer to access other sql server within a domain? Thanks in advanced.

den2005

Simply choose Connect from the menu and connect to a different server. If you want to you another server in your query you can setup a linked server whereas you can query across different servers in one query.

Access from MS-Excel to Analysis-Services-Cube from different domain

Hi Profis!
We have some server installed with customer, which run in an exclusive
domain (only this server and because of that also DC). Let's call him
"OLAP-Server".
All the clients are in another domain.
Access to "OLAP-Server" via HTTP works fine, also mapping of a drive (with
manual authification).
There is no firewall between all the Server and PCs in all domains. So we
can exclude problems with ports.
What does not work?
Access from Excel-XP-Clients or Excel-2003-Clients to OLAP-Server (running
Analysis Services) will always be blocked.
If in domain auf OLAP-Server there is an user with SAME username and SAME
password as in the other domains, access from MS-Excel works fine. If not,
access will not be possible.
Analysis Services may not be configured for access via HTTP or HTTPS as we
have installed Standard-Edition of SQL-Server.
Question 1: is there a possibility to access to Analysis-Services-Cube via
HTTP or HTTPS also on standard-edition? (except of installing local Excel
and publice as HTML... ...we need a REAL access via Client-installed
MS-Excel!
Question 2: is there a possibility to deactivate authentification to
Analysis-Services-Cube? A trusted domain (even in outgoing connection) ist
not possible due to internal reasons.
Many thanks for urgently required help!
Best regards,
Klaus

NTLM or basic authentication?
does IIS is on the same server as your OLAP Server?
maybe there is a delegation problem.
so try the basic authentication first.

Access Denied when connecting

I am having a problem connecting to my SQL 2005 named instance on a clustered
server in another domaim. If I am within the domain everything works fine. If
I am in a different domain, I cannot register it through SQL Management
Studio or create an ODBC connection. I can ping it and all of the cluster
nodes. When trying to connect I get the following errors:
SQL Management Studio:
"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When
connecting to SAL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that
under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
(provider:SQL Network Interfaces, error:26 -Error locating server/instance
specified)
ODBC:
SQL Server Error: 17
ODBC SQL Server Driver SQL Server does not exist or access denied
However, the server is set up for remote connections.
Any Suggestions?
What type of authentication are you using Windows or SQL?
If you are using SQL login, you should be able to connect as long as you can
ping the server. Since your SQL server is on a different Domain, and you
want to use your Windows domain account, make sure that you have a trust
relationship between the 2 domains if you login to one domain and want to
access the other one.

Access denied starting SQL Server after joining to new Windows domain

Hi, I made following steps:
1. Remove the SQL Server 2000 computer (W2k3) from old Windows domain
2. The same computer joined to new Windows domain (newdomain)
3. On the Domain Controler (W2k3) I create an domain account
SQLLaunch, which is a member of Domain Users group.
4. On the SQL Server 2003 computer I changed the SQL Server service
startup account to SQLStart@.newdomain account. The same thing made I
with the SQL Server Agent Service. Both the SQL Server Service and SQL
Server Agent start automatically when OS starts.
after these steps I tried to start the SQL Server service, but the
SQL Server did not start. Error message dialog appears as follows:
"Could not start the MSSQLSERVER service on Local Computer
Error 5: Access denied"
After I login to the SQL Server computer using SQLStart@.newdomain
account and try to start the sqlservr.exe in SQL Server home directory
similar error dialog appears:
"Access denied"
first after I made the SQLStart@.newdomain account a member of
the local Administrator group on ther SQL Server computer, everything
is going well.
What can I do to avoid to grant the Administrator's rights to the
SQLStart@.newdomain (in order to
minimize risk of exploits - it is not the right way to grant the
Administrator's rights). The desire is to use a domain account
without any Administration rights. Can anyone help me?
thanks
LiborI don't think that the account needs full admin rights to the server, but it
needs the "log on as a service" rights. When you set the account that runs
the service, the OS will automatically grant this right. I'd expect though
that you need to be logged on with an account that has the rights to grant
this rights to do it. In other words, try to log on the the server as
Administrator (or another account with admin rights) and then set the
account for SQLSERVER and SQLServerAgent service. Then the account should be
granted rights to log on as a service. Then try to restart the server (or
just the service). Remember to remove the SQL acounts from the servers admin
group before you test it.

problem too. Simply reinstall the server with the option
"registry rebuild". I guess, it makes the same things as You
recomended. In addition, the startup account must be
registered as a SQL Server login.
Unfortunatelly, starting the SQLServerAgent needs to have the startup
account a member of the SQL Server System Administration group.
But this is not a critical for me.
