Access/MSDE/SQL internet licenese?

I know that SQL Server cost plenty to license for internet use...per year. But is there the same costs for MSDE and/or Access? I was recently told that every internet user would have to have a license to use a site that had Access as the database. I'm really not sure how true that is or if its MS support fobbing me off. Anyone know?MSDE doesn't have that $5k/cpu license that sql server has. However, as a developer, you have to sign off a redistro rights thing.

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/howtobuy/redistregister.asp

you were getting dragged by the nose ring by the level one support bastards.|||But isn't that just the equivalent of buying the product? What I'm unsure of is the client license side of things. So I can freely distribute MSDE but how many users can access that DB freely? Esp. from the internet...it's a mine field!|||http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/howtobuy/msdeuse.asp

READ! I told you already, there's no price on MSDE, but there's a price on SQL Server.|||IT DOESNT SAY! I'm obviously going blind. Show me where it says that I don't have to buy a license, even for 25 users, when it's the persistant store to a web application. Sure it says you can, but doesn't state that it's at no extra cost. For example, if you look at the SQL license stuff it says $xxx per license but you have to dig around to discover that's not true for a internet facing SQL Server. That's $xxxxxxxxxxxx!

Access with SQL

We would like to have SQL connect with an Access database over a WAN.
Is the best way to use MSDE and allow SQL to connect directly to the
Access database or to convert this database every so often to SQL?
Thanks!
Ernie AdsettThe big question would be if you can get to the Access database at all over
the WAN, permission/security wise. For instance, you have a sqlserver
(server1) running under 'Joe' account and this account in no way can
access/connect to a remote computer (server2) due to windows permission, you
will not be able to get to the Access database.
If you can resolve the windows security issue, you can get to the Access
database either through a linked server (sp_addlinkedserver), ad-hoc
distributed query (opendatasource/openrowset). You can look these up in sql
book online for more info.

|||To create a linked server to access an Access database
Execute sp_addlinkedserver to create the linked server, specifying Microsoft
.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 as provider_name, and the full path name of the Access .mdb d
atabase file as data_source. The .mdb database file must reside on the serve
r. data_source is evaluated
on the server, not the client, and the path must be valid on the server.
For example, to create a linked server named Nwind that operates against the
Access database named Nwind.mdb in the C:\Mydata directory, execute:
sp_addlinkedserver 'Nwind', 'Access 97', 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
'c:\mydata\Nwind.mdb'
To access an unsecured Access database, SQL Server logins attempting to acce
ss an Access database should have a login mapping defined to the username Ad
min with no password.
This example enables access for the local user Joe to the linked server name
d Nwind.
sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'Nwind', false, 'Joe', 'Admin', NULL
To access a secured Access database, configure the registry (using the Regis
try Editor) to use the correct Workgroup Information file used by Access. Us
e the Registry Editor to add the full path name of the Workgroup Information
file used by Access to thi
s registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Je
t\4.0\Engines\SystemDB
After the registry entry is configured, use sp_addlinkedsrvlogin to create l
ogin mappings from local logins to Access logins:
sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'Nwind', false, 'Joe',
'AccessUser', 'AccessPwd'
Access databases do not have catalog and schema names. Therefore, tables in
an Access-based linked server can be referenced in distributed queries using
a four-part name of the form linked_server...table_name.
This example retrieves all rows from the Employees table in the linked serve
r named Nwind.
SELECT *
FROM Nwind...Employees|||Is Access forming a front-end db for a SQL DB?
Would it not be possible to utilise some kind of web site (ASP) or similar.
It will run much faster over a WAN.
Or are you 'replicating' the SQL Server db to an AccessDB?
You dont need MSDE to connect to a SQL Server DB. MSDE is the 'desktop'
version of SQL Server.

Access vs. MSDE

I understand how msde is more powerfull than assess but is the only way to use MSDE through the web matrix. If I want to update a table or change data how can I open the file and work with it or is this when I buy SQL server. I travel full time and do all my work from my laptop so I do not want to install any server software on it. Or should I just us access and use the upsize wizard to use MSDE.

Adam TaylorCould use a little more info.

It all depends:

Are you developing applications for other people?
Is it for personal/business use, contact management, etc?
What exactly is it that you are trying to accomplish?

Thanks.|||You can get to the tables etc using Access (At least you can with access 2002)

start Access
select the New Project (Existing Data)

Then select the machine (or type it) where the tables are
Supply login details (should be same as you require when using web matrix)

click the drop down to select a database to work on

It should work - does on mine

then you can use all access tools to manipulate the data - plus add tables and stored procedures

Access vs MSDE

Currently developing a website with Access Db at the backend which needs to synchronise with another Access Db. I have assumed that I should migrate this to MSDE with replication to go live ... but can/should I stay with Access ?
Replication is possible within Access, & is easier to setup. However, you
then need to run the Syncronization Manager which has the annoying 'feature'
of leaving a taskbar item running at all times.
Your requirement to upsize to SQL Server should consider more than just the
need for replication such as:
1. The number of concurrent users expected.
2. The required availability of the db.
3. The backup requirements.
And many more...
Many books on Access & SQL Server discuss this in detail, but if your only
reason for upsizing to SQL Server is for replication, it probably isnt
necessary...

|||Thanks James.
I take your point re the other requirements and I'm trying to knock them off one by one but I'm finding it quite difficult to get any definitive answers (especially given the MSDE 'Governor' problem). Also its difficult to judge what some of the variables
may be (e.g. concurrent users could be loads if the web-site is popular or zilch if not!). I'm having to juggle the needs (and lack of funds!) of a small business start-up and guess a lot of it!
Could you recommend any particular books/sites that do good comparisons ?
|||There are licensing implications with making SQL Server data available from
the intranet & internet. I believe they are as follows:
For intranet access Per Seat licensing is ok, as long as you have enough
CALS to cover all users.
For internet access, Per Server licensing is required.
You should therefore be using SQL Server Standard edition at least.
If keeping costs down is important, I would probably recommend using Access.
You can upsize fairly simply should it be required in the future, but you
cannot easily downsize.
This link might help you with regards to the governor:

fyi I think the licensing is OK for MSDE on the web tho' (see http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/howtobuy/msdeuse.asp)

access upsize problem

I am trying to upsize an access 2000 application to MSDE. I get an error 14,
invalid connection. I have read sever al articles in the MS KB but have not
found out what to do. I have WinXP, Office Pro 2000. I am trying to put the
MSDE server on the same machine as the access front end. I would appreciate
reference to a 'cookbook' article about how to make the upsize work. Thanks
I'm not sure what you've read or haven't read, but there isn't a
straightforward approach to getting the upsizing wizard to work,
especially with Access 2000, which was released *before* SQLS 2000,
and thus has many incompatibilities, including different date ranges
for datetime data types. I'd recommend upgrading to Access 2003 if you
want things to work smoothly even after you move the data over. Access
and SQLS are completely different, have data type incompatibilities,
and radically different functionality at the engine level. A straight
port of an Access mdb rarely works well if the application is at all
complex, as most business apps are by definition. It's important to
understand at the outset that the two engines are NOT interchangeable,
and that it is going to take a certain amount of work on your part
(depending on the complexity of your app) to get it working correctly
on MSDE.
The upsizing wizard was written for the lowest common denominator to
handle as many cases as possible by translating all text and memo
fields as unicode, and all validation rules (at least, the ones it can
figure out) as triggers. In cases where there is no exact translation,
entire tables get skipped. I'd recommend creating the structure in SQL
Server and then loading the data, which you can do using DTS or even
Access queries (linking to the empty SQLS tables from the mdb).

Access to MSDE database

Hi
I am just starting my first .NET project using the web matrix and an MSDE database. I am pretty much at the limit of my knowledge - all very interesting. I have some data in an Access spreadsheet (6 columns and 365 rows) which in the past I have copied and pasted into an Access database table. How do I get it into a MSDE database table? This process does not need to be automated/programmed as I will only have to do it once a year. Any ideas on the easiest way forward would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
MikeUse the Upsizing Wizard in Access. Tools/Database Utilities/Ubsizig Wizard, as I recall.|||Douglas
Very many thanks for the advise - it got me going along the righttracks. In the end I used File/Export (which seemed well suitedto transfering data in a single table). I had to configure someODBC connections (which took me a while to understand and setup). Anyway, it seems to work now.
Thanks again.

access SQL instance issue

I have a MSDE instance running on a server. I am able to start the services
for the
engine. But when I try to access the instance through "SQL Enterprise
Manager" I
get an error message.
"[server name] - SQL Server does not exist or access is denied."
I tried to access the instance through "Windows Authentication" and "SQL
Server Login" and I get the same error message.
I tried reinstalling "MSDE 2000A Desktop Engine" and SP4. I am able to start
the SQL services and I can restore a few databases from backup to the
instance.
Also during reinstallation of "MSDE 2000A Desktop Engine" I set the sa
password
using the SAPWD switch.
Questions:
Is there somthing that I am forgetting to do?
How can I access the instance through SQL Enterprise Manager?
Thanks in advanceGreg,
Instance? Have you tried servername\instancename?

MSDE instance. I need to access thaat instance from SQL Enterprise Manager. I
only installed EM from the SQL 2000 CD so that I can access the MSDE instance.
How about this, How do I put the MSDE instance in single-user mode?

So MSDE is the only SQL Server installed? Try registering with the machine
IP address. Or if that doesn't work try:

Access Project with MSDE2000

Hi Gurus,
I've got a question when using Access Project with MSDE2000. I can properly install MSDE and connect a Access Project with master database, but I can't create table or modify table structure, is there any thing wrong?
My os is XP, and Access 2000.
Thanks in advance
You probably dont want to be creating tables within the master db anyway.
When you load Access, chose 'Project (New Data)'. This should allow you to
create your own db, which you should be able to create tables in...
Cheers,

Access permissions

I have recently installed MSDE for the first time and created a .adp file
that connects to my MSDE server. However, when I create a new table within
the .adp file I can't add new records to it. Also, when I go to the
"Advanced" tab of the "Data Link Properties" dialog box all of the Access
Permissions are greyed out. I feel that this could be part of the problem.
Any suggestions?
Nevermind, I figured it out. I did not have the table indexed therefore I
wasn't able to add new records.

Access ODBC "Cast" Error

I am repeating this question here from the MSDE topic
I have found a problem when linking a SQL Server 2000 table that contains an
auto incrementing integer into Access 2002 via ODBC. Access identifies this
field correctly as an "autonumber" field. However, when I add a record to the
table, I get an ODBC error that mentions a "Cast" error. In other words, the
ODBC driver is translating the field from SQL server (via Cast type
function?) but Access thinks that the number can exceed the limit of an
autonumber and we get the error. The only work around I have found so far is
to link access to a table with the same name and ODBC connection, but where
the SQL Server field is just an integer. Access then translates the field as
a long integer. Then I replace the SQL table with the one that has the
incrementing integer field, but don't refresh the link to Access. Records can
now be added and edited in Access without a problem. Anyone seen this bug?
Please do not post the same question in multiple newsgroups. Asked and
answered in msde.

Access MSDE instance remotely

I have a named instance of MSDE running on my windows 2k3 web server. I can connect just fine using ODBC to that DB whailst I am on the server.

I would like to be able to create an ODBC connection from my local machine (running Windows XP pro) to the MSDE database on my server but I can't get it going.

I have heard that I need to edit the registry but a Google search warns that this could be a vulnerability...

How do I do it without compromising the security of my web server?

TIAMostly, when you install MSDE by default settings, net library are not installed. Have a look to the Readme.html, or install Network client ton activate Named pipes or TCP/IP.|||I have the SQL server network utility installed as I can see it when I use the command svrnetcn.exe

Do I need to add a new pipe? I'm a noob at this sort of thing I'm afraid so an idiot proof answer will probably be needed! :D|||Next to what you said above, it seems that there is no net library installed. So install Named pipes and TCP/IP. Confirm, and try aggain to connect to the named instance from your machine.|||I'm sorry but I don't follow you. How do I do this?|||ok progress "I think"

I'm now connecting to the server but I get this:
http://www.openmindhosting.com/odbc.jpg

I'm using the same login I use for RDC connections to the server so I know its the admin account...|||Good ! Now, I think the problem is the authentication (I can see login failed for 'Administrator').

Try to use the account sa with its password (you must have configured it at install). If not, it must be empty (that is a bad thing :D )|||ok I finally managed to login through ODBC. I had to log off on my local machine and then logon using the same username and password as the server. I then adjusted the ODBC connection so that it used windows authentication and itc reated the datasource!

Marvellous I thought! :)

Logged back off and then back on as my normal user, which is also an admin account and then tried to set the datasource in the ColdFusion adminstrator and was told it was not a trusted connection for user NULL. Grrrrrrr |||So, good ! :)|||It would be if I didn't want to use CF to connect to the database! ;)

I'll figure it out... Thanks for your help...|||Sorry, I don't know how ineract Coldfusion with SQL. Maybe you would ask to r937 (http://www.dbforums.com/member.php?u=7592) ? I think he knows CF !

Access MSDE From VS 2003 Server Explorer

Not sure if this is a MADE or Visual Studio issue, but here goes:
I have MADE and SQL Server GUI tools installed (GUI from Developer Edition)
to support database app development with Visual Studio .NET 2003 (VS 2003).
I have the sample databases installed (pubs, North, etc.) via an executable
file ConfigSamples.exe which includes TO-SQL scripts to create the sample
databases then populate the tables with data.
Because ConfigSamples.exe is not "a known archive type" I cannot get inside
to see the TO-SQL scripts to discover how these databases are made to not
demand user authentication in VS 2003 Server Explorer.
From VS 2003, I can see my MADE instance and the databases, and access them
via Server Explorer or from .NET apps I develop/evaluate. So far, so good.
Now the issue:
I need to create new databases in conjunction with various projects, and
have done so successfully using the SQL Server GUI tools, and from TO-SQL
scripts. When I create the new database, Enterprise Manager and Query
Analyzer allow my access to do whatever I want with the database.
Not so in VS 2003 Server Explorer! the new database does show up in the list
of databases under the MADE instance, but when I try to expand the new
database node, up pops a dialog asking for a Username and Password, or
offering me the choice of using Win NT Authentication. No answer I provide
to this dialog gives me access to the database. Choosing NT Authentication
gets me another dialog with *no message text* and only an OK button to
click, and trying any ID/password combination gets me a message indicating
it's not acceptable.
I should say that I'm running using full administrative privileges.
So the question is: how can I create a database like the sample databases
that can be accessed in Server Explorer? Is there a way to turn off the
security check?
Disclaimer: I'm not a SQL Server jock (obviously) and am using the software
and databases to teach college classes and evaluate student projects, so try
to keep it fairly simple?
Thanks in advance for any insights.
Arrrrgh!!
Somehow all instances of "MSDE" in my post were changed to "MADE", could
have sworn I clicked "Ignore" in the spell checker. Sorry!

Thanks.yes...just register it like you would any other SQL Server (EM) or make a

Access MSDE Database

Hi All,
Is it possible to access MSDE with either Enterprise Manager or Query
Analyzer. If so can you let me know how too?
Thanks.yes...just register it like you would any other SQL Server (EM) or make a
standard connection in QA using the proper authentication. Those two tools
make no distinction between SQL Standard/Enterprise and MSDE

Access mdb link tables

I need help to link my MSDE 2000 database with access 2000 *.mdb. When I try to do this and then I try to open a table, I can't see my data but just something like "#delete".
Thank you for helpYou may wish to include more information about your environment and the workstation on which you are seeing the issue. For example:

Were you previously able to link from the workstation without seeing the issue (if so, describe what has been done since then)? Are you able to do so from any other workstations using Access (if so, describe them) or is this a universal issue? What Access / MS Office, and MDAC service packs are currently installed?

{It may or may not be the case that applying the current MDAC and Office service packs, and subsequently relinking, (delete old links, recreate new ones) will address the issue on the workstation.}|||I just find the solution, just have to use int datatype against bigint, in SQL Server 2000. After this change everything is ok.

Thank you

Another Sql Server data type mapping to be cautious with in some versions of client software is bit. If a bit column is null in some rows, some front end applications do not always handle the situation gracefully (depending on what type the Sql Server bit column is mapped to in the front end app).

Any Ideas?did you install it as an administrator, and you're logging in as a user?|||Yes, I installed it under the admin account I am logging in as admin.

Thanks, Justin.|||Did you follow the instructions?

I've yet to experience any failed installs of msde.. Did you select anything specific or create an sa account?|||Yes, I followed the readme instructions. I used a command prompt with this command: setup INSTANCENAME="InstanceName" SAPWD="AStrongSAPwd"|||is the service not starting? or are you unable to log in to it?|||When I try to start the MSDE from the sql service manager I get the following error:
"This service control action can not be completed as no service has been selected"

There are no services in the services drop down.|||... Um.

The Server: is your computer name right? and you clicked Refresh Services...?
